چکیده

Under tension, confined elastic layers can exhibit various modes of mechanical instabilities, including cavitation, fingering and fringe instabilities. While the cavitation has been extensively studied, the fingering and fringe instabilities have not been well understood, and the relations and interactions of these instabilities have not been explored yet. In this paper, we systematically study the formation, transition, interaction and co-existence of mechanical instabilities in confined elastic layers under tension. Through combined experimental, numerical and theoretical analysis, we find that the mode of instability is determined by both geometry and mechanical properties of the elastic layer through two non-dimensional parameters: layer’s lateral dimension over its thickness and elastocapillary length over the defect size. A phase diagram is calculated to quantitatively predict the occurrence of any mode of instability. We further show cavitation instability and fingering instability can coexist and interact with each other in one elastic layer. The current work can help the design of robust adhesives by rationally harnessing the desired mode of instabilities while suppressing the other modes. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fringe instability in constrained soft elastic layers.

Soft elastic layers with top and bottom surfaces adhered to rigid bodies are abundant in biological organisms and engineering applications. As the rigid bodies are pulled apart, the stressed layer can exhibit various modes of mechanical instabilities. In cases where the layer's thickness is much smaller than its length and width, the dominant modes that have been studied are the cavitation, int...

Adhesion-Induced Instability Patterns in Thin Confined Elastic Film

Adhesion-induced instability has been observed at the interface of a flexible plate and a thin elastic film bonded to a rigid substrate. The surface of the confined film develops undulations almost instantaneously, and instability patterns appear in the form of fingers or bubbles at the interface. The characteristic wavelengths of these instabilities remain independent of all material and geome...

Cavitation of water by volume-controlled stretching

A liquid subjected to negative pressure is thermodynamicallymetastable. Confinedwithin a small volume, negative pressure can build up until cavities form spontaneously. The critical negative pressure for cavitation in water has been theoretically predicted to be in the range of −100 to −200 MPa at room temperature, whereas values around−30MPahave been obtainedbymany experiments. The discrepancy ...

Electric-field-induced interfacial instabilities of a soft elastic membrane confined between viscous layers.

We explore the electric-field-induced interfacial instabilities of a trilayer composed of a thin elastic film confined between two viscous layers. A linear stability analysis (LSA) is performed to uncover the growth rate and length scale of the different unstable modes. Application of a normal external electric field on such a configuration can deform the two coupled elastic-viscous interfaces ...

Instabilities and pattern miniaturization in confined and free elastic-viscous bilayers.

We present an analysis of the instabilities engendered by van der Waals forces in bilayer systems composed of a soft elastic film (<10 microm) and a thin (<100 nm) viscous liquid film. We consider two configurations of such systems: (a) Confined bilayers, where the bilayer is sandwiched between two rigid substrates, and (b) free bilayers, where the viscous film is sandwiched between a rigid sub...
